English Weekend Adventures

The cost of European holidays in the summer, as you can probably expect, shoots through the roof. £1 flights are imposible to find, accomodation is double the price and completely full and the entry cost to any sight is massive. The crowds in Europe are also out of control. I hate a line at the best of times but mid summer in Europe is just mad. We have tried to stay in England for the last month and managed to go on some pretty crazy adventures.

England has so much history especially when compared to the youngest country in the world, NZ. Before lorry filled roads and 500m fast trains much of the cargo in England was transported by way of canal. England has a massive network of man made canals which disect the country side between towns and major cities. What was onced used for transporting water and cargo is now home to a major subculture of long boat owners. The majority of people within this culture are retired couples getting away from a large city to live on the canal however there are also hippies, weekenders and people on tours like us.

Ten friends on a canal boat dressed as pirates. We were the scurge of the Warick canal system. Lined along the side of the canal systems are pubs. Heaps of pubs!! We basically drove the boat, sometimes not very straight and into the sides, from Warick to Rugby on a pirate themed pub crawl. It was great and did not take long before someone chose to walk the plank.

The next weekend again still in England we were lucky enough to get invited to the Cotswolds for a day trip. It was only a short drive and the traffic was suprisingly clear. The sat nav took us down some pretty interesting routes down small farm roads with only just enough room for a small car (the Holden Belmont would have been in serious trouble). The Cotswolds is a rural area of Central England dotted with small little stone and thatched roof cottages.I think the pics speak for themselves.

We had one more weekend in London this month and took the opportunity to do another couple of touristy things. We both love food as I am sure you would know if you have read other previous blog posts. We decided therefore to go to high tea at the Hilton for cucumber sandwiches. Oh how posh!! As we left one of the waitresses commented on how impressed she was to see two people eat the entire meal. I replied by asking her to bag the chocolate plate. Waste not want not!!

We are off to Ireland soon for a three day tour, so watch this space!
